GOP eyes Indiana upset amid national push to diversify party

(AP Photo/Paul Beaty) Paul Beaty AP GARY, Ind. After a lunchtime roundtable with Indiana Sen. Todd Young and Utah Rep. Burgess Owens, Republican congressional candidate Jennifer-Ruth Green suggested she appreciated “serving alongside my peers.” “Not my peers,” she quickly corrected. “I misspoke.” Green isn’t their congressional colleague yet, but her slip might not be all that premature. Democrats have represented this industrial, union-friendly corner of northwest Indiana in Congress for nearly a century. But their grip on the seat is in question as the party faces headwinds around the U.S. this year, buffeted by President Joe Biden’s low approval ratings and high inflation. The contours of this district, encompassing Gary, have been redraw...

Editorial Roundup: Florida

Image
Tampa Bay Times. October 25, 2022. Editorial: Early rebuke for DeSantis’ elections police It highlighted the state’s own culpability in registering felons to vote. A Miami judge dealt a victory Friday for the law, decency and common sense by dismissing a fraud case brought by Gov. Ron DeSantis and his new elections police force. The ruling was a high-profile rebuke as early voting began Monday for the November general election, and it should send the governor a strong message about playing politics with the voting booth. Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Milton Hirsch tossed out the criminal case against Robert Lee Wood, one of 19 people the governor accused in August of voting illegally in the 2020 election. In the first legal challenge to DeSantis’ arrests, the judge rejected the idea that Florida’s Office of Statewide Prosecution could charge Wood, 56, with registering to vote and casting a ballot, ruling that it was the government — not Wood — who took the extra steps to get him regi...

3 things working parents want from their employers

Image
October 25, 2022 10:45 AM Image Credit: Getty Images Unicef says it best: “The business case is clear: Investing in family-friendly policies helps improve workforce productivity and a company’s ability to attract, motivate and retain employees.” The agency, part of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide, recommends that employers implement a number of strategies to support working parents. These include a minimum of six months paid parental leave, the guarantee that women are not discriminated against, the proper enablement of breastfeeding at work, and supporting access to affordable and quality childcare. Hybrid working Working parents in the U.S. have long been frustrated with what is on offer at their workplaces and while some companies are doing the work to support employees with families, a brighter light has been shone on the issue since the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced so many workers home. ...

Scale vs. expertise: What’s more important for brokers?

Image
The theme I want to cover in this editorial is brokerage mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and how widespread consolidation is changing the insurance distribution marketplace. One broker I spoke to at a recent conference said they’d received three offers in the first day of the convention to sell their independent brokerage to larger regional or national brokerage entities. I expect those propositions were three of maybe hundreds of deals that were laid on the table during that conference. This is not a new theme; it perhaps just felt more intense because the conferences were all in person and dealmakers could look each other in the eye and get a real feel for the proposals. In recent years, there’s been record M&A in the brokerage sector. After a minor slump at the start of the pandemic, deal activity among distributors – including retail brokers, wholesale brokers, managing general agents (MGAs) and reinsurance brokers – picked up dramatically from June 2020 onwards, and si...

Britain’s new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delivers a speech outside Number 10 Downing Street, in London, Britain, October 25, 2022. Hannah McKay | Reuters LONDON — Rishi Sunak on Tuesday became the UK’s third prime minister of the year following a meeting with King Charles III. The tradition sees the monarch invite the leader of the party with the highest number of MPs to form a government, which since the 2019 general election has been the Conservatives. Sunak was elected party leader by fellow Conservative lawmakers on Monday after the resignation of Truss on Thursday. In a speech outside 10 Downing Street after the meeting, he said: “Our country is facing a profound economic crisis. The aftermath of Covid still lingers, Putin’s war in Ukraine has destabilized energy markets and supply chains the world over.” He paid tribute to his predecessor Liz Truss, who said he was “not wrong” to want to improve UK growth. But, he continued, “some mistakes were made,” not “borne of ill ...

If DeSantis wins and runs for president, would he have to resign? There are options.

Image
Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and his Democratic opponent Charlie Crist take to the stage for their only scheduled debate in Fort Pierce, Fla., Monday, Oct. 24, 2022. Crystal Vander Weit AP TALLAHASSEE It was the debate question Gov. Ron DeSantis squarely avoided: “Why don’t you look in the eyes of the people of the State of Florida and say to them, if you’re reelected, you will serve a full four-year term as governor?’’ Democratic rival Charlie Crist asked Monday evening. “Yes or no, Ron?” After a long pause, DeSantis turned to his notes and quipped: “The only worn-out old donkey I’m looking to put out to pasture is Charlie Crist.” The response during the only debate in Florida’s race for governor was not an answer, but the issue raises questions of its own. DeSantis has done little to tamp down speculation that he plans to run for president. Polls show he is a party favorite, and his campaign has steered more than $61 million to the Republican Party of Florida...
