TikTok of teen who inhaled squeaky dog toy goes viral. Wait till you hear him laugh

The high-pitched noise of a squeaky toy echoed through the halls of a Texas hospital. There was no therapy dog around the corner, though. Instead, it was a boy, sheepishly laughing, the squeaking coming from his throat.
The TikTok of a teen who swallowed a dog toy went viral, garnering over 26 million views and raising the same question for many viewers: How did it happen in the first place?
Jonathan Serrano shared the video his mom filmed on Oct. 7. In the background of the video, a health care worker covered her face in amusement.
“She thought I was really stupid,” Serrano said.
Though it made for a funny video, Serrano wrote on TikTok that he was worried he could die. Choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death, according to the National Safety Council.
“I was afraid that the dog toy might move to a position that the air wouldn’t go through anymore,” he told ABC News.
In a later video, Serrano explained that he was playing with the little part in the dog toy that makes the squeaking/whistling sound when he accidentally swallowed it and it got lodged in his esophagus.
Serrano’s mom told ABC that they were getting ready for a camping trip when Serrano, 13, was playing with the dog toy. In the video, Serrano is wearing a T-shirt for a camp in Montgomery.
“He wasn’t ready yet and he was sitting there annoying me with this dog toy and so I get this two-liter bottle and I’m like, ‘Johnathan, I’m gonna hit you if you don’t stop,’” Serrano’s mom told ABC. “When I go to grab it, it’s empty, and he ducks and swallows it (the toy).”
Serrano said on TikTok the toy would squeak whenever he laughed or talked.
“I’m going to be honest, I didn’t believe it at first until I saw the nurse laughing in the back,” one person commented.
The doctors put Serrano to sleep and extracted toy using a scope, ABC reported.
“He was, like, king of the hospital,” Serrano’s mom told the outlet. “All of the doctors and nurses would go in there and be like, ‘Hey, can you make the noise for us?’”
“Lack of oxygen to the brain for more than 4 minutes may cause brain damage or death,” according to John Hopkins Medicine. To learn more about the dangers of choking and what to do when it happens to you or someone else, visit the organization’s resource page.
Montgomery is about 55 miles northwest of Houston.
